Last one in is a rotten egg

Dynamic Duo
(Ed and Bobby)

I guess I am the rotten egg. I was dead last coming in from
our 20 miler Saturday. But hey, I don't mind, I finished.
My 20 miler went decent. Strong for the first 10 miles.
Started going downhill from there. Struggled on the way back
but made it in close to my estimated time. As usual I started
out too fast then ran out of gas.

Ed and I pretty much stayed not far behind Team Bean.
Caught up with them at the top of Turkey Mountain (that
sounds impressive that we climbed a mountain). They were
soon out of site though. We stayed up with Rachael, Linda,
Jennifer and Tammy until the Jenks turnaround where they
activated their "Power Girl" powers and shot ahead. Never
seen them again from the Casino water stop until we got back
to the finish where they were still waiting to congratulate us.
Thanks girls, hope you weren't waiting long. Team Bean and
most of the others were still hanging around also. Thanks
for the encouragement guys and gals.

Did anyone else struggle with those stairs crossing Riverside
near 31st on the way back? Kinda made me feel like an old man.

Thank you Susan & Candice for being such great cheerleaders
and checking on us while we were out.

Thank you Dave for the course, the water stops and the chalk talk.

Ken, since you are running with me in the marathon here is my
one mile lap times (not counting brief stops) to give you an idea
of where I am at:

11:49 13:55 11:57 12:38 11:59 13:30 11:34 12:11 13:17 12:36
14:32 14:21 14:16 15:44 13:41 15:19 14:46 15:29 16:11 14:45

Bobby, I really think you did totally awesome, you and Ed. Don't consider yourself dead last, you were first to finish your first 20 mile run, that is incredible, would you have thought way, way back in January, when we were all running in the cold-winter days, that we all would be where we are today, the only one missing from our January crew is Allen.

As for the stairs, I avoided those stairs at 31st, I went a little longer and ran up and around, I know the stairs were shorter distance, but my Runner Girl Power was beginning to feel a little depleted, needed a little more octane, by the time I hit the pedestrian bridge.

You are GREAT Bobby, proud of your accomplishment, what a wonderful example you are to your granddaughter.

Keep on Keeping on!!

I am so proud of you. I never in my wildest dreams thought we would be doing this at our age.

Bobby I wish you and Ed could have seen Lisa and I going up the stairs. We were nearly crawling up. So much that a girl had stopped and ask if that was a part of our workout and what group of muscles did it stretch out? We must have been some site. to say the least, yeah, we had some problems there too.

Bobby, from a purely technical standpoint, your splits are more than adequate to meet your goal of a sub-6 hour marathon. You even have a 15 minute cushion. My advice, and we can experiment with it in 2 weeks, would be to slow down a little bit in the first few miles and see if that results in the 15-22 mile splits being a little more even. My personal opinion is that if you still slow down in the later miles, then go ahead and run what feels right early on....not pushing the pace, but run comfortably. We'll play with it next weekend.

You are doing great, and judging from blogs and other comments I have received, you are not the only one to slow down in the last miles. Part of that is pacing. For a 6 hour marathon, you need to average about 13:44 per mile. I would suggest on our next long run to try to hit close to 14:00 right from the very start. It's okay to do a training run slower than race pace. If you are going faster than 13:30 for any of the early miles, you probably are going too fast.

I love Chrissy's comment!! That was great!

Way to go on your first 20 miler!! It's totally okay to be last (trust me - I speak from experience). Training is all about getting yourself prepared for the race. And you already know that your problem is that you start out too fast. (It's hard not to - so much more fun to stay with the group!) When you do the Mock try to slow down in the early miles and even out your pace and see if that helps. You can always speed up later on if you're feeling up to it, but once you are out of gas, it's a long walk back to the gas station!

You're doing awesome!! Just a few more weeks and you'll be an official "marathoner"!!

Thanks tz, tatur dave and candice
for the training advice. Will slow it up on the 22 miler and see what happens.
